More illustrative type.

I got really stuck with my illustrative type brief at one point so decided to research more into illustrative type to see if I could more inspired! This has definitely helped because some of the things i've found have shown me that I could simply distort a font in order to make it 'illustrative' and represent a particular film, I could use texture in order to make a font look like a material it actually isn't and maybe represent an object and using pattern and depth throughout a typeface can also make it represent a particular thing, message or film in my case. I've found some great work whilst researching this area again and via behance have been able to see where people began with this so hopefully I can use these things as tips.

Illustrative type; company logos.

I looked at logos in order to help me gather some thoughts on the one I am creating for this brand. This has made me think about what and how the logo will be applied to, whether or not imagery is nescessary and whether a logo should speak for itself simply through typography. Although the ones I have found are for various different companies etc it has made me consider what I can do to stand out from other brands and that i'd like to try make my designs as simple as possible.

Illustrative type; film merchandise.

I researched film merchandise to give me some idea of the products I could use within my range if I hadn't already considered some of the ones above. It also gives me an idea of how products work together and whether the obvious route in terms of design is best or whether to be quite experimental with it. The interesting thing was that when I was researching this, I didn't actually find anything for any of the films I was looking at but I know for a fact that due to their popularity you can get hold of many products. I don't know whether me not seeing them is a good thing or not because it could mean I don't take inspiration from something that has already been done and I create something completely new and unique.

Illustrative type; film imagery.

I sourced some images from each of the films off google images in order to try and inspire myself for the illustrative typefaces. These images give me ideas on what colours I could use within my typefaces, the textures I could use and also even the type of typeface I could look at creating in terms of the font style. I want to try and steer well clear of the original film typefaces if I can because I want there to be a little mystery behind the typeface and if I used one of those it would make it too obvious. Having knowledge on each of the films already is definitely going to benefit me.

Illustrative type; film choices.

I choose the above three films because I wanted to go for a range of films as I want my company to suit all ages of target audience. I also wanted to try and cover a few different tastes within the film industry. These films I know personally, are very popular amoungst people of all ages so the choice was pretty easy but to back up the decisions I've got some figures above of how much the films have made, therefor showing the popularity.

Coca Cola; bottles.

Just by coincidence I was in town one weekend and Coca Cola happened to be promoting the latest limited edition range of Coca-Cola bottles so I picked up a free bottle of Diet Coke with the consideration that it may prove useful for my research. I was able to see what relevent information needed to be included on the bottle, how they had gone about laying both the back and front of the bottle design out and also the quality of the print. Due to the fact I'm focusing more on the actual bottle design and the promotional side of a limited edition range all the extra information isn't as relevent but it still needs to be considered because I need to leave space within my designs for these factors. Seeing the bottle printed like this also gave me ideas for the materials I'd like to consider when it comes to my own designs but this form of printing will be proposed.

During the summer I also picked up the complete set of the olympic range for this London 2012. It was great to be able to compare to two bottles because although the material of the bottle was the same, the designs were completely different. This shows that there isn't really any limitation in what I design because many different designs can utilize the bottle design and shape. This bottle also proved good for research because all of the olympic ones have been packed in this cardboard case. I imagine the reason for packaging this is because London 2012 is such an important event and a once in a lifetime thing so the quality of the product needed to be higher than that of the other bottle designs. This is seen as more of a collectors item with the event that it is connected to. The type of packaging and whether the item is packaged at all will definitely depend on the purpose of the bottle range. I think with my own bottle range it will not need to be packaged like this because the idea of my concept is to sell the bottles so the packaging would be a waste because it would just be thrown away. I also think in a way that the packaging takes a lot away from the actual bottle design because it hides the majority of the design.
