Print study task three - stock options & print finishing.

Information & wayfinding.
A piece from my own collection of print.
This booklet is printed on light weight stock as it is meant to be picked up and carried around by the consumer so would be no good being heavy and would cost a lot more to produced. Using a lightweight stock would also save money because this is the sort of product that someone may look at once and then dispose of. Although a cheaper stock has been used, the product has a high quality foil blocked finish where the title is which may make the consumer reconsider keeping this item.

A piece from my own collection of print.
This is another stock that is likely to have been chosen for its low pricing because consumers will pick it up, look at it and then throw it away again. Its a simplistic stock that doesn't have any particular print finish because the idea is that its giving out the information and its up to the consumer wether or not they take note of it, they don't need any persuading.

The two particular stocks that stand out here are the acetate and the stock used for the front cover of the book. The front cover works really successfully because it has this line texture to it and when it has been printed on the ink has applied perfectly to certain areas giving it a further texture. This is really good feature because it makes the design seem a lot more hand made, something which is of value. The acetate also looks really good in this piece of design because it adds a shine to the whole of the book and also looks quite sophisticated when layered over the images because you can see there has been consideration into this feature.

This booklet has been printed on thick card with matt varnish applied on the outer cover and matt varnish paper on the inside. Both inside and outside being matt varnished work really well together because it keeps the design consistent. The fact the outside is made from thicker card also works in terms of the fact it will be quite durable so the booklet will be able to be kept for a while and when the designer has gone to all this effort they wouldn't just want it to be thrown away. The techniques applied also make the design seem more interesting as the initial angle is quite simplistic in terms of illustration.

This booklet looks as though its been printed on newsprint due to the texture you can see through the areas where the ink has been applied. This is a quality option for something that needs to be understood more so over looking good. It's also a cheaper option if working to a budget and seeing a booklet contains a fair amount of pages it's one of the better options. The colour comes out just as bold here as it would on any other high quality stock so nothing is lost.

This design is quite clever really because all the information has been included in newspaper form. This is a very creative piece of design because it means the consumer has to interact with it on more than one level to be able to understand it. The stock is very likely to be some sort of newsprint to give this newspaper-esk finish as it has to be light weight and low cost. The fact the stock is almost transparent doesn't knock the design back at all because the consumer will constantly be getting an idea of whats coming next and this will keep them interested.

This calendar design looks as though its been printed with a matt varnish finish but this may not be entirely true because when you look closer it seems that the ink applied this particular stock seems to be making it slightly shiny. This is a further piece of design that may be printed on to news print because each calendar month will be torn off and thrown in the bin so again it comes down to moving saving stock whilst trying to give some form of quality.
