Print study task one; what is design for print? - Information & wayfinding.

These university open day invites are a sophisticated and stylish example of wayfinding. The clean cut design means they not only tell people where to go but they look really good too. The fact the typography has a slight shine to it gives the invites a little bit of class too and the information looks as though its printed on a more interesting choice of stock to add to the whole look. The way the information is set out and these other considerations could say a lot about the uni for example, its organised, modern and sophisticated.

The illustration on this map/leaflet really stands out because of the colour and styling. The way the information fits into a sleeve is a bonus because it will keep it looking tidy and due to being handcrafted might be kept as a souvenir too. The actual way finding itself is really successful because it has a simplistic layout which will be understood by most if not all people. Using colour coding always works well because not only does it make things easier but it makes the piece more interesting with the variety. The general layout has been considered in a way that makes the information easy to understand and also to find if theres a particular thing your looking for.

This piece is can be admired as a piece of design because it displays complex information but translated into such a simplistic way. The colours work well with the fact the product being displayed is the ipod because these colours seem innovative and modern in a sense. The layout of the sections of colour guides your eye around the apple logo and it seems quite clever because its somewhat hypnotising. The background being black is successful as it makes the colours stand out due to the colour choice and doesn't wash them out instead. The whole layout has balance and consideration so that all the information can be included.

The relationship between positive and negative space on this piece makes it work because it means the image the coloured squares create can be recognised easily as countries. This is another piece thats captures the audiences eye through the choice of colour and simplistic 'imagery' with the squares. It reminds me a little of the pantone colour swatches so is something I can easily relate to as a designer. This could work on both a large and small print scale due to the simplicity of the design.

O2 academy promotional leaflet (primary)
The O2 leaflet always has the same kind of layout and style as seen above. Its such a successful concept because although the leaflet folds out quite large it can still be folded up and put in your pocket or purse. The mixture of text and imagery works really well due to the balance of imagery and text on alternate pages. The leaflet includes an incentive of a free drink which is a good way of leading people to the bar so it means the wayfinding will do its job. Although the type is small, its not so small it can not be read and this is another positive thing about this leaflet because it means more information can be included in each addition. The general composition makes the venue look busy as theres so much to view so this may be another way it persuades people to go.
